Let us turn our attention to the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 1. We are introduced to Samuel’s mother, Hannah, a woman who longed for a child. In her distress, she cried out to the Lord and made a vow, promising that if God would give her a son, she would dedicate him to His service. God heard Hannah’s prayer and blessed her with a son, whom she named Samuel.
From a very young age, Samuel served in the house of the Lord under the guidance of Eli the priest. One night, as Samuel lay down to sleep, something extraordinary happened. The Lord called out to Samuel’s name, “Samuel, Samuel!” Mistaking the voice for Eli’s, Samuel ran to him, saying, “Here am I; for thou calledst me.” But Eli, perceiving that it was the Lord who had called Samuel, instructed him to respond, “Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:9, KJV).
In this moment, Samuel learned the importance of recognizing and responding to the voice of God. It was a divine interaction that would shape the course of his life. From that day forward, the Lord continued to speak to Samuel, revealing His plans and purposes for Israel.
As Samuel grew older, the people of Israel recognized the wisdom and anointing upon his life. He became a trusted prophet, judge, and counselor. Through Samuel, God brought about great victories for His people and provided guidance in times of trouble.
In 1 Samuel 7, we witness a powerful manifestation of divine intervention through Samuel’s life. The Israelites were in the midst of battle against the Philistines, and Samuel cried out to the Lord for deliverance. God heard his cry and thundered upon the enemy with great force, causing them to be defeated before the people of Israel. Samuel set up a stone and called it Ebenezer, saying, “Hitherto hath the Lord helped us” (1 Samuel 7:12, KJV). It was a testament to God’s faithfulness and His divine interaction with His servant.
Another significant event in Samuel’s life occurred when the people of Israel demanded a king to rule over them. Samuel warned them of the potential dangers of having a human king, but they insisted on their request. However, even in their disobedience, God continued to interact with Samuel and guide him.
Samuel anointed Saul as the first king of Israel, but as time went on, Saul’s disobedience and lack of reverence for God became apparent. Once again, God interacted with Samuel, instructing him to anoint David, the shepherd boy, as the future king of Israel. Samuel obeyed the divine call and anointed David, setting in motion God’s plan for the nation.
We see the depth of Samuel’s relationship with God. As Samuel aged, the people of Israel gathered around him, expressing their desire for a king. But Samuel reassured them, saying, “God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way” (1 Samuel 12:23, KJV).
The life of Samuel teaches us several valuable lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the importance of listening for the voice of God in the midst of a noisy and chaotic world. Samuel’s willingness to position his heart to hear God’s voice enabled him to step into his divine destiny.
Secondly, Samuel’s story demonstrates the power of obedience. He wholeheartedly followed God’s instructions and fearlessly proclaimed His word, regardless of the circumstances or the reactions of others. May we be inspired to obey God’s voice, even when it is difficult or goes against popular opinion.
Lastly, Samuel’s life serves as a testament to the faithfulness of our God. Throughout Samuel’s journey, we see God’s hand at work, guiding, protecting, and empowering His servant. Just as God was with Samuel, He is with us, ready to interact with us in extraordinary ways when we seek Him with all our hearts.

Cultivate a heart that listens for the voice of God and responds in obedience and trust in His faithfulness, knowing that He desires to interact with us intimately and use us for His divine purposes.
