The Giving of the Law:
In Exodus 19-40, we witness the significant event of God giving the Law to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. The Law, consisting of the Ten Commandments and various statutes and ordinances, served as a guide for Israel’s moral, religious, and social life. It established the framework for their relationship with God and with one another. Through the Law, God revealed His holiness and provided instructions for righteous living.
The Construction of the Tabernacle:
Simultaneously, God instructed Moses to construct the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where His presence would dwell among the Israelites. The Tabernacle was a tangible symbol of God’s desire to commune with His people. It consisted of a holy place and the most holy place, housing the Ark of the Covenant, the mercy seat, and other sacred items. The construction of the Tabernacle followed precise instructions given by God, reflecting His glory and holiness.
The Role of the Law:
The Law served a significant role in God’s plan of redemption. It exposed the reality of sin and demonstrated the need for a Savior. The Apostle Paul later affirmed that the Law was a schoolmaster, leading us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). While the Law revealed God’s standards and provided a temporary means of atonement through sacrifices, it ultimately pointed to the coming of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the Law and established a new covenant based on grace and faith.
Perspective:
As believers, we should recognize the importance of the Law and the Tabernacle as foreshadowings of Christ and the New Testament covenant. We should also understand that the Law was fulfilled in Christ, who became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (Hebrews 9:11-14). The Tabernacle, with its emphasis on God’s presence, reminds us of the indwelling of the Holy Ghost in believers today.
As we reflect on the Law and the Tabernacle, let us remember that through Christ, we are released from the burden of legalism and the need for external rituals. Romans 8:2 (KJV) declares, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Through the Holy Spirit, we now have a personal relationship with God, experiencing His presence and guidance.
Take time to reflect on the significance of the Law and the Tabernacle in God’s plan. Consider how the coming of Christ has fulfilled the Law and brought us into a new covenant. Embrace the freedom and grace found in Jesus, knowing that His Spirit dwells within you.
